The Greek Basic Course introduces the modern spoken language to those who wish a working command of contemporary Greek. The Greek represented in this course is a representative of the Kathomilumeni variety that is the "standard" speech of educated Greeks. It is neither entirely colloquial nor strictly formal. In the written materials the Greek alphabet is used from the beginning.

The FSI Greek Basic Course Vol.1 introduces the modern spoken language to those who wish a working command of contemporary Greek. FSI Greek Basic Course, Vol. II, continues the style and format of Vol. I. It rounds the presentation of the basic grammar of colloguial (kathomilumeni) Greek and lays the foundation for a rapid acquisition of katharevousa, to be presented in a projected Volume III. Units 26-50.

FSI Greek Basic Course, Vol. III, , has been planned as a foundations for reading newspapers and official dokuments written in Katharevousa. The first five units consist of basic dialogues in modern standard Greek (Kathoumiloumeni) and narratives in Katharevousa. The remaining 70 units provide reading materials in Katharevousa. Features of Katharevousa grammar are described from the beginning of the volume, extensive drills being provided to assist the students in mastering them. Units 51-75a
